FUNCTIONS

STRONG START TO YEAR

Some 328 Cape Town Press Club members attended our first four functions of the year, which generated over 40 news reports including television coverage and mentions in the foreign press.

We also held our first function at the Cattle Baron in Pinelands. We will be using this venue again. The food and service were excellent; the venue was able to meet our budget and management generously waived corkage. The venue has ample free parking.

2019 FOCUS

GENERAL ELECTIONS

With a general election set for May, the Press Club will continue to focus for the next few months on the political parties and their leaders. We have already had the ANC, DA, UDM, and we are following up with invitations to other parties in the national and provincial legislature. There will be other speakers too!

We hope you will take advantage of this unique opportunity to put your questions directly to these Members of Parliament.

MEMBERSHIP

THANK YOU

Thank you to all members who have renewed their subscriptions. We had a very strong response from members taking advantage of our early bird special.

We have also approved the following new members: Paul Dalmeyer, Magubane Khulekani, Marongoa Ramaboa, Jo Frater, Bernd Dorries, Phillip Engelen, Hansel Ngala, Tumoetsile Mogamisi, Abdulah Ibrahim Dasar and Brita Unite.

Please note also that journalism students can now join for a mere R25.

SCHOLARSHIPS

The Barry Streek Memorial Bursary

The Cape Town Press Club administers the Barry Streek Memorial Fund which currently has R350,000 in its endowment, money raised by our members. The income generated from this is used to make a financial contribution to journalism students in need, annually; something the club has been doing for 10 years already.

We will be announcing our bursary awards in the coming months.

If you would like to contribute to the fund and help us to continue to build on this important initiative, please contact the club secretary, ">Lalage Maurer.

Volunteers Sought

We have a number of simple but time-consuming administrative tasks to improve the club experience and we are looking for volunteers to assist. Please contact the secretary if you would like to help.

A big thank you to our hardworking committee. We have held nine committee meetings in the past six months. Special thanks also to Tony Grogan who continues to do our cartoons as a gift to speakers at the club. Thank you also to GET WINE for their generous discounts on the excellent wines we serve.
