Velenkosini Hlabisa on Fixing Local Government and the Future of Coalitions

Velenkosini Fika Hlabisa has been Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) in the Government of National Unity (GNU) since June 2024, and President of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) since 2019. He previously served as a school principal, Secretary-General of the IFP, Mayor of the Big Five Hlabisa Local Municipality, and Leader of the Opposition in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature.
COGTA is finalising a landmark review of the 1998 White Paper on Local Government to address municipalities’ structural, financial, and service delivery challenges.

The Minister will address the Cape Town Press Club on how local government reform will solve our water, electricity, and sanitation crises. He will also explore the future of coalition government.

He will take questions.
