Ukrainian Ambassador Olexander Scherba on Ukraine in Today’s Defining Conflict
His Excellency Olexander Scherba, the Ukrainian Ambassador to South Africa, has a clear message for our country: call on Russia to end the war in Ukraine.
As the conflict enters its fifth year, it is estimated that at the current rate, combined Russian and Ukrainian casualties could reach 2 million within a few months, according to the US-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies. Of this, Russian forces have suffered 1.2 million casualties, with as many as 325,000 killed since February 2022, losses far greater than any major power has suffered in any war since World War II.
Dr Scherba will address the Press Club on Ukraine’s position in what is widely regarded as one of the defining conflicts of our time, as well as on his government’s relationship with South Africa. A question-and-answer session will follow.
Dr Scherba was appointed Ambassador to South Africa in July last year. He has held several senior diplomatic posts, including representing Ukraine in the United States and Austria. He holds a doctorate in political science and is also an author. His most recent book is Ukraine vs Darkness: Undiplomatic Thoughts.
He will take questions.
