Minister Dean MacPherson on those who would profit illegally from state construction
Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Dean Macpherson will address the Cape Town Press Club on a national strategy to deal with those who would profit illegally from state construction, including what is often referred to as the “construction mafia”. Macpherson has served as public works minister since July 2024, having been a public representative since 2009.
As Minister in charge of the country’s state-owned land and buildings, he has had to deal with a sector beset by procurement corruption. He has sought to establish rules and guidelines to govern the acquisition, building and maintenance of public infrastructure, often putting him in politically sensitive situations and in conflict with powerful enemies.
A member of the Democratic Alliance, he was previously the party’s shadow minister for trade and industry, and elected chairperson of the DA in KwaZulu-Natal in 2021. Macpherson grew up in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, and currently resides in Umhlanga. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the South Africa-United Kingdom Chamber of Commerce in London.
Minister Macpherson will describe the challenges and share his strategy to take on those who would profit illegally from state construction.
He will take questions.
