Mathews Phosa on the past and the future of the ANC
Nakedi Mathews Phosa has written an account of the ANC, the organisation to which he had dedicated his life and occupied senior positions.
Following the ANC’s unbanning in 1990, he played a prominent role in the Codesa negotiations while heading the ANC’s legal department. In 1994, Nelson Mandela appointed him as the first premier of Mpumalanga. He became ANC treasurer general in 2007 and went on to contest for the deputy presidency of the party in 2012 against his exact contemporaries, Tokyo Sexwale and Cyril Ramaphosa.
Phosa’s memoir, Witness to Power, is a gripping tale of underground activism, armed struggle, negotiated transition, and political intrigue. It provides fascinating new insights into the ANC and its most senior leaders.
Phosa will address the Cape Town Press Club on the past and the future of the African National Congress.
He will take questions.
