
Wandile Sihlobo with Johann Kirsten on stark challenges facing the country’s agricultural sector
Wandile Sihlobo and Johann Kirsten are the authors of The Uncomfortable Truth About South Africa’s Agriculture, which is published this week.
Sihlobo is the Chief Economist of the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa and Senior Lecturer Extraordinary at the Department of Agricultural Economics at Stellenbosch University and holds visiting appointments at Wits School of Governance and Rhodes University. He serves on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Presidential Economic Advisory Council and has also served on the Presidential Expert Advisory Panel on Land Reform and Agriculture.
Kirsten is Professor and Director of the Bureau for Economic Research at Stellenbosch, prior to which he was Professor and head of the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development at the University of Pretoria for more than two decades. He is a leading expert on agricultural policy, agricultural commodity markets, land reform and the economics of origin-based foods.
They will speak to the Press Club candidly about the stark challenges facing the country’s agricultural sector and what can be done about them. They will take questions.
