Tony Leon – Present day South Africa and its future

THIS EVENT WILL BE FOLLOWED BY OUR 2021 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Tony Leon, founder of the Democratic Alliance and former leader of the official opposition, will share his uniquely placed insights into present day South Africa and its future with the Cape Town Press Club.

Penned during the coronavirus lockdown, Future Tense, his latest book, examines the surge of both the disease and the response, which has crashed the economy, as well as the rise of Julius Malema’s populism, and how this echoes global discontent elsewhere.    He also provides an insider view for the first time of the power struggles within the official opposition party, which saw the exit of its first black leader in 2019.

Leon, who served for 20 years in Parliament, first taking Helen Suzman’s seat when she retired, and then leading the Democratic Party to become the longest serving leader of the official opposition since the advent of democracy, was also Ambassador to Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay (appointed by President Jacob Zuma).

He will take questions.
