Professor Jeremy Seekings on “Where next for UCT?”
Professor Jeremy Seekings is not alone in saying that there is a crisis at the University of Cape Town and problems of governance have deepened under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng. But Seekings has been outspoken about it.
Seekings is Professor of Political Studies and Sociology and Director of the Centre for Social Science Research at the University of Cape Town. His current research focuses on the politics of welfare reforms historically and in contemporary Africa, and on party politics and voting behaviour in Southern Africa. His most recent book,co-authored with Professor Nicoli Nattrass, is Inclusive Dualism: Labour-Intensive Development, Decent Work and Surplus Labour in Southern Africa (Oxford University Press, 2019).
Seekings will address the Cape Town Press Club on the effects that problems of governance are having at UCT. He will take questions.
(Chairpersons’ note: Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng has been invited to speak at the Press Club)
