Prof Jonathan Jansen on why working-class schools still fail working-class kids

Jonathan Jansen is a Distinguished Professor of Education at Stellenbosch University. The eldest son of a preacher and a nurse, he grew up on the Cape Flats in a conservative evangelical church which shaped his values for good and bad. He was a biology teacher in the Cape before he pursued studies abroad. He then returned to assume leadership positions in a number of South African universities. Relieved of administration, he now does what professors are supposed to do – think!  His family make him possible, and he lives for his two amazing granddaughters.

Following the release of his latest book, “Breaking Bread”,  Prof Jansen will address the Cape Town Press Club on “why the working-class South African education system in schools is still failing working-class kids”.  He will discuss many of the educational themes raised in his memoir and share his views on the divisive Bela Bill.

He will also take questions.

Professor Jansen’s new memoir “Breaking Bread” will be on sale at the event.
