Premier Alan Winde on “How Independently a Province Can Act”
Alan Winde’s term as Western Cape Premier has been defined by a series of challenges he has issued to national government in key delivery areas: safety, energy, transport, and trade & investment. Recently, he led a Western Cape delegation to Washington to argue the case for the continuation of AGOA, the US trade deal on which Western Cape fruit and wine farmers and many other businesses and jobs are dependent. Premier Winde has made it clear that within the provisions of South Africa’s Constitution, he wants more powers devolved to competent provincial and local governments in order to better serve residents and citizens.
Winde is a South African politician with roots as an entrepreneur. He became Premier of the Western Cape in 2019, representing the Democratic Alliance. He has been a member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since 1999.
He will take questions.
