Chris Pappas on his expectations for the 2024 elections
Chris Pappas is the Democratic Alliance candidate for KwaZulu-Natal Premier in the upcoming General Election. He is currently the Mayor of Umgeni.
Pappas speaks Zulu and he is openly gay. His election in a majority black community was seen as unusual, given South Africa’s racial politics. Time Magazine included Pappas on its “TIME 100 Next list”, writing that since taking office as Umgeni mayor, he “has managed to balance the municipality’s budget for the first time in over a decade”.
Previously, he was a member of the KwaZulu-Natal legislature (2019 – 2021) and a member of the eThekwini City Council (2016 – 2019), and is the DA deputy provincial leader since 2021.
Pappas will address the Cape Town Press Club on his expectations for the 2024 elections, the political landscape looking ahead and what his premiership in KZN if elected will look like.
