Professor John Higgins - The End of Toleration @ The Pavilion, Kelvin Grove

Professor Higgins will address the Cape Town Press Club on : The End of Toleration? : Academic and press freedoms in a time of climate change.

A climate of fear is said to be gripping some universities, with students and lecturers afraid to speak their minds and university authorities shying away from inviting controversial speakers. Bringing together freedom of the press and academic freedom both of them fundamental to democracy Professor John Higgins argues that we are seeing increasing evidence of catastrophic climate change in politics and the academy.

Higgins is Arderne Chair of Literature at the University of Cape Town and a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa. He has recently edited two special issues of journals dealing with higher education and student protests: State of Urgency (Arts and Humanities in Higher Education 2016 ) and Constituting Higher Education (Kagisano 2017), while his most recent book is Academic Freedom in a Democratic South Africa. In the past three years, he has been a guest speaker at the universities of Amsterdam, Bergen, Berlin and Stockholm.
