Nazeer Sonday of Philippi @ German Club Roodehek Terrace

Nazeer Ahmed Sonday is the force behind the Philippi Horticultural Area (PHA) – ‘a food and farming campaign’. He represents a group which seeks to protect the Cape Flats aquifer while, at once protecting the agricultural integrity of the green township from ‘development’.

Sonday argues that the current South African narrative for 'economic development' has led to increasing poverty, unemployment, inequality, food insecurity and climate change. His organisation believes that is has a model for sustainable cities in general – not just for the Philippi area.
The numbers speak for themselves, Sonday says. There is 25% to 34% unemployment. He notes that there are 14 million food insecure people in SA. About a quarter of children are stunted owing to malnutrition. In Cape Town in some townships there was an estimated 80% level of food insecurity. Cape Town was also water insecure. On top of it land reform threatened food security.

Sonday says the PHA represents a model of development that ‘re-imagines’ development centred productive economics in the Philippi Horticultural Area farmlands – some 3 000 ha.

He will take questions.
