Minister of Trade and Industry Rob Davies @ Grill Room, Kelvin Grove

The Minister for Trade and Industry on South Africa’s economic recovery and future.

Signs are everywhere that the South African economy is in serious trouble. Appointed in 2014, Minister of Trade and Industry Rob Davies is busy serving his second term. In his first term he oversaw the development and implementation of the annual three-year rolling Industrial Policy Action Plans.

In his current term, he certainly has his job cut out for him. "We have had fraud, corruption and state capture which has meant in some cases - contracts have not been given according to the localisation prescripts. All of them have supported imports over local production," Davies told Parliament.

In his portfolio, Davies steers the country’s participation in such crucial groupings as SADC, BRICS, our Economic Partnership Agreement with the EU, the US-Africa Growth and Opportunity Act, and the World Trade Organisation. He also has to work out what a post-Brexit environment means for the county’s significant trade with the UK.

Davies will address the Cape Town Press Club on how government intends to place the South African economy on the road to recovery. He will take questions.
