Judith February @ Grill Room, Kelvin Grove

Political commentator, governance specialist, accredited mediator and senior research associate at the Institute for Security Studies, Judith February is a regular columnist for the Daily Maverick and Eyewitness News and frequently appears on radio and television. February helped lead the campaign to get political parties to declare their funding and also worked on exposing the infamous “arms deal”.

February will speak to the Cape Town Press Club, reflecting on the country’s democratic journey and how polarised perspectives on the present are informed by the past, on what lies beneath the surface and exacerbates the social tensions and fractures in our society along the lines of race and class. She will take questions.

February was executive director of the HSRC’s (Human Sciences Research Council) democracy and governance unit and also head of IDASA’s (the Institute for Democracy in Africa) South African governance programme for 12 years.

February’s recent book Turning and Turning: Exploring the complexities of South Africa’s democracy (Picador) will be available to purchase.
