"George Claassen will speak on fake news"

Claassen is the Press Ombudsman for News24 and Media24 Community Newspapers. From his unique vantage point and a wealth of experience, he will speak to the Cape Town Press Club on how and why social media will become a vital tool in spreading and countering fake news, as well as protecting the health of society and democracy.

Claassen is a former head of the Department of Journalism at Stellenbosch University, where he still teaches media ethics to postgraduate students. He was ombudsman for Die Burger for eight years and since 2008 has been the ombudsman for Media24.

He is chair of the South African National Editors’ Forum’s ‘Science Journalism Training Committee’. In 2017, while he was based at the Centre for Journalism Ethics at the University of Wisconsin in the USA, he researched the effects of misleading advertising in the health trade and the role the media play in sound ethical reporting with regard to health claims.
