Ann Bernstein on Unemployment and the Presidential Jobs Summit

Unemployment in South Africa stands at over 37%. Among young people (aged 15-34) over 39% are not in employment, education or training. Last month, StatsSA announced that formal employment had declined in the second quarter of 2018 with 69,000 less jobs.

Ann Bernstein, executive director, Centre for Development and Enterprise (CDE), an independent think tank and one of South Africa’s leading development policy centres, will address the Cape Town Press Club on unemployment and share her personal insights on the Presidential Jobs Summit, which was held in October.

The Presidential Jobs Summit followed months of consultation between government, private sector, unions and community organisations.

Bernstein was on the Board of the Development Bank of Southern Africa from 1994 to 2001. In 2005, she was a Fellow at the National Endowment for Democracy, Washington DC. She was a member of the Brenthurst Foundation board from 2007 to 2017; in 2008 and 2009, an invited faculty member, World Economic Forum, Davos.

Bernstein is a regular commentator in the South African media.
