Janet Heard has just been appointed associate editor, head of news, at the Cape Times after spending a year as a Nieman Fellow in the US. She will address the press club on a number of issues: the fight for quality journalism in the new media era, her return to South Africa in the afterglow of the World Cup and the ANC's moves to clamp down on press freedom.

Former Intelligence Minister and MK commander Ronnie Kasrils has just published a book "The Unlikely Secret Agent" about his late wife and fellow actvist Eleanor who escaped from police custody in 1963. He will speak of her courage and skill as an undercover agent of the ANC and link those times of apartheid tyranny with some of the challenges, and dangers, South Africa faces today, with particular reference to the freedom of the press and the constritutional liberties he and his wife fought for. Title: "Deepen our Democracy - Do not gag it!".
